COMPANY HOMEWORK · 66 RESEARCH CANDIDATES

Know what you own—or what you are considering.

This is a research queue, not a list of recommendations. Each sector pairs three established companies with three smaller, newer, or higher-volatility companies. The second group can carry substantial financing, dilution, execution, regulatory, or business-model risk.

THE HOMEWORK LOOP

Research the business before the ticker.

Inspired by the publicly described practice of reading releases, reviewing filings, and listening critically to earnings calls. Signal Desk is not affiliated with Jim Cramer or CNBC.

01

Know the business

Explain in plain language how the company makes money, who pays it, and what could make customers leave.

02

Read the latest 10-K and 10-Q

Compare revenue, margins, cash flow, debt, share count, segment results, and the risk-factor changes.

03

Read material 8-K filings

Look for acquisitions, financing, leadership changes, guidance updates, legal matters, and other material events.

04

Review the earnings release

Separate one-time items from the underlying trend and compare management guidance with the prior quarter.

05

Listen to the conference call

Take notes on management’s outlook and the analyst questions. Watch for changed wording, not just headline numbers.

06

Check the balance sheet

Measure cash, debt, interest cost, dilution risk, and whether the company can fund its plans without favorable markets.

07

Compare competitors and valuation

Use the same operating and valuation measures across peers; a good story can still be priced too aggressively.

08

Write the thesis and disconfirmers

Record what must go right, what would prove the thesis wrong, and which filing or metric will answer the question.

10-K

Annual audited statements, business description, material risks, and management discussion.

10-Q

Quarterly financial update, current operating discussion, and changed risks.

8-K

Material events such as major agreements, leadership changes, financing, or updated results.

IMPORTANT BOUNDARY

Signal Desk does not rank these companies, assign price targets, predict returns, or tell you to buy, sell, or hold. “Emerging” does not necessarily mean small-cap, and it does not mean safer or more promising. Verify the current business, listing, filings, capitalization, and risks before relying on any entry.
